WINDOWS SERVER

Windows server refers to the brand name for a group of operating systems released by Microsoft. It includes all windows operating systems that have windows server in their names but not any other Microsoft product. It helps administrators to control their users also helps them to implement different policies on machines. The following are editions for windows server:

windows server 2003 with its first edition Windows NT 3.1 [1993] advanced server , Windows NT 3.5 [1994] server , Windows NT 3.51 [1995] , Windows NT 4.0 [1996] server , Windows 2000 [2000]  server, Windows Server 2003 [2003] , Windows Server 2003 R2 [2006] , Windows Server 2008 [2008] , Windows server 2008 R2 [2010] , Windows server 2012 [2012] , Windows server 2012 R2 [2013], windows server 2016.

Windows server 2012 was the one we installed during industrial practical training and the followings services ware installed on th e server:-

Ø  Installation of VMware workstation

Ø  Installation of windows server 2012 using VMware workstation

Ø  Installation of client using VMware workstation

Ø  Installation of DHCP and its configurations

Ø  Installation of active directory domain service and its configuration

Ø  Installation of internet information service (IIS)

Ø  Installation of windows deployment services (WDS) and its configurations

Before installing the windows server 2012 on your machine the followings are the minimum hardware requirements for your machine:-

Hard disk space	32 GB

            

              INSTALLATION OF WINDOWS SERVER 2012

Use the image of the windows server from the CD or from the flash disk to install it into your machine.

How to install windows server 2012

 Steps followed during installation of a windows server 2012

1: choose the configuration  but choose typical which is recommended then click next

2: enter the product keys, choose the version of windows to install, choose the name to personalize the windows enter passwords which is strong password

3: Choose the name of the machine and the location where it will be installed. Click next to continue with installation

4: Read and accept all the terms so that you may continue with installation

5: Choose Custom (Advanced) in order to install a new copy of Windows

6: Choose the disk size for a windows server. Click next to continue with installations processes

7: Click finish and restart a computer and log in as administrator to start configuring the windows server.

8: Specify the memory (RAM), processor its LAN segment of the windows server.

ACTIVE DIRECTORY DOMAIN SERVICE AND DOMAIN CONTROLLER

Active directory domain service (AD DS) is the server role that allows administrators to store and manages information about resources from a network.

DOMAIN CONTROLLER

This is the server that is running a version of a windows server operating system and has active directory domain services installed. It authenticates and authorizes all users and computers in a windows domain.

Active directory domain

This is the collections of objects within Microsoft active directory network and these object can be single user or a group of users or it can be a hardware such as printer or computer..

 Forest

Forest is the collection of one or more active directory domains that share a common logical structure, directory schema, directory configuration and global catalog

Tree

Is the collection of domains that shares a common domain namespace namespace

Creating users

To create a user click tools> active directory and computer>user>right click> add user

Creating organization unit

In order to create an organization unit click tools then active directory and computer then right click domain name then new finally click organization unit

Adding a user to the organization unit

Right click the user you created then move to the organization unit you created

Sharing of files

In order to share files make partition of the local disk by right clicking on the start button then click disk manager then make partition.

Go to tools click active directory and computer then user then right click user then click new group.

Setting NTFS permission for users who login to computers

Right click the file created in the local disk check properties select security click advanced then click first option then click OK then click edit right click user then click remove.

Giving permission to userbh s click add then type user you created then add permission by putting a tick sign

Group policy organization (GPO)

In order to see how many policies had been created expand the forest then click on the group policy object. Click one of the policy then click setting then click show all. And if you want to create a new group policy right click group policy object then click new. Group policy results shows which policies affects a certain user when logged in.

Installation of dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP)

This is the client/server protocol that automatically provides an internet protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default gateway.

Installation of installing internet information service (IIS)

This is the web server software package designed for windows server and it is used for hosting websites and other content on the web.

The following are the procedure of installing this service of internet information services first click add role and features then click next then next then next and then click a web server IIS by putting a tick sign on the checkbox then click next for finalizing installations

Creating shadow copy and making backup

First create a folder on the local disk E or F whichever you created and then save it. Open server manager click manage then add role and features then click next three times then click windows server backup then click next then click install.

Click tools then windows server backup then click local backup then click backup once then choose different option then click next then custom then click next then add items then put a tick sign on the checkbox of the system state then expand the local disk then select the folder that you want to backup then click OK then click next then remote shared folder then location \\choose the server name

Installation of window deployment services (WDS)

This is the role that enables you to deploy windows operating systems over the network, which means that you do not have to install each operating system directly from a CD or DVD.

Installation of server core

This server offers a lot of advantages on working environment some of its benefits are  it has greater stability as its installation has fewer running processes and services, it simplifies management since there are fewer things to manage on the server core installation, it reduces attack surface since it has fewer system services running on it.

Configuring server core

Open the windows PowerShell then login as administrator and enter password to navigate into the server
